Beginning Again
As the Seasons Change
Oh, delight! My winter birds arrive again. A cardinal couple, sparrows, and juncos, Even the blue jay that crowds them away. Excited squirrels nibble seeds dropped to the ground, Scurrying quickly as if it could be their last. A woodpecker joins the scene, Picking at the bugs along the baren maple tree. "Where have you all been?" I say aloud. "I’ve missed you through the summer heat." In response, a wren begins to sing, As a tufted titmouse flutters along. Oh, how I want to escape the day and play! To drag my feet through the leaves, To feel the sun’s rays, To bask in the freedom of childhood joys, Imagining stories And singing made-up songs. How lucky I am To notice the subtle season's change On this November day.
With loving wishes for the stillness of noticing,
Amy
